New Photodiode Perform Well for Wearable Vital Signs Monitoring Applications

ams OSRAM, a leading global supplier of optical solutions, announced on April 12 the launch of the new photodiode TOPLED® D5140 SFH 2202, which offers superior performance, higher sensitivity to visible light in the green part of the spectrum and higher linearity than existing standard photodiodes.

The new TOPLED® D5140 SFH 2202 photodiode has higher sensitivity and better linearity than standard photodiodes on the market; Under complex ambient light conditions, wearable devices using TOPLED® D5140 SFH 2202 can more accurately measure heart rate and blood oxygen saturation (SpO2); TOPLED® D5140 SFH 2202 provides excellent vital sign monitoring performance for high-end wearable device manufacturers' products and is more competitive in the market.

These improved features significantly reduce the impact of ambient light interference and result in higher quality received light signals, enabling smartwatches, activity trackers and other wearable devices to more accurately measure heart rate and blood oxygen saturation.

A Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a semiconductor element that emits light when current passes through it in the forward direction. Electrons and holes recombine in the depletion layer, releasing energy in the form of photons. LED have electrical characteristics similar to ordinary diodes. Various market segments such as automotive, industrial, consumer, and healthcare require specially designed semiconductor photodiodes to produce products with superior performance.

Due to the higher sensitivity of the TOPLED® D5140 SFH 2202 to green wavelengths, the system can work with lower LED light intensities, saving power and helping extend battery life while maintaining highly accurate measurements, providing Better heart rate measurement performance.
